He is married to Nia and is the father of Garan, Bedo and Edwy. They fill his world and many of his poems. He was a member of the Welsh Department at Swansea University from 1999, before retiring due to ill health in 2025. At the end of that year, the University awarded him a D.Litt. degree for his contribution to Welsh culture. He won the chair at the National Eisteddfod twice, in 2010 and 2025.
