He has been involved in the development of using art creatively through the fundamentals of art therapy. He founded one of the first large art therapy studios in Alberta, Canada, for which he was the art director, a counsellor, and a program developer. In 2013, Chrysalis Therapeutic Art Outreach Program won the Edmonton Mayor's Award. Infusing the resilience of his family in his writing, Canales hopes that his story will give hope to those that are searching for answers in their quest for healing.
