Overview

Too Migrant, Too Muslim, Too Loud is a no-holds-barred memoir and manifesto from outspoken senator, troublemaker and multicultural icon Mehreen Faruqi. As the first Muslim woman in any Australian parliament, Mehreen has a unique and crucial perspective on our politics and democracy. It is a tale of a political outsider fighting for her right and the rights of others like her to be let inside on their terms. From her beginnings in Pakistan and remaking in Australia, Mehreen recounts her struggle to navigate two vastly different, changing worlds without losing herself. This moving and inspiring memoir shares shattering insights learned as a migrant, an engineer, an activist, a feminist and a politician. 'Compelling . . . If only all political memoirs were this honest.' BRI LEE, author of Eggshell Skull and Who Gets to be Smart 'Faruqi is a shining light' OMAR SAKR, author of The Lost Arabs 'An authentic and powerful voice for human rights, social justice and multiculturalism.' TIM SOUTPHOMMASANE, former Race Discrimination Commissioner 'intelligent and electrifying' BRIDIE JABOUR, journalist and author of The Way Things Should Be 'This is the impassioned insider's account of the state of Australian politics by one of our most trail-blazing politicians.' 'An inspiring and powerful memoir by one of the most fiercely principled, courageous and compassionate leaders in this country. Mehreen paves the way for a new generation, offering them an example of the moral courage it takes to shift power in favour of the marginalised from the centre of the most powerful institutions in this country.' Randa Abdel-Fattah, author of Does My Head Look Big in This? 'Mehreen writes just as she speaks in parliament: with an unwavering passion and conviction. Her memoir is a refreshing insight into her life, sharing with us the experiences that made her the inspiring leader she is today.' L-Fresh the Lion, hip-hop artist and musician 'Faruqi's story is one of defiance, tenacity, and hope. She lays bare the hypocrisy of parliament house, and counters its banal toxicity with a commitment to integrity and care. Above all, her story of coming to Australia and making her home here is a wonderful and compelling read. If only all political memoirs were this honest.' Bri Lee, author of Eggshell Skull and Who Gets to be Smart 'To write of your life with honesty requires integrity. To do it in the face of overwhelming bigotry is courageous beyond measure. Faruqi is a shining light I'm not sure Australia deserves, but is infinitely lucky to have.' Omar Sakr, author of The Lost Arabs 'An intelligent and electrifying book. This is not a typical political memoir, but a mirror held up to Australia which asks difficult and essential questions. Too Migrant, Too Muslim, Too Loud confronts the gigantic issues of our time: racism, climate change, feminism, as well as our family lives. An extraordinary book, from an extraordinary woman.' Bridie Jabour, journalist and author of The Way Things Should Be 'An inspiring, intimate insight into the life of Australia's groundbreaking first Muslim woman senator. From her journey as a migrant from Pakistan to Australia, breaking barriers as an engineer in a male dominated profession, and standing up to racist abuse as a high-profile woman of colour, it is a passionate outline of Faruqi's core political beliefs and what drives her passion for environmental and social justice. This unapologetically feminist as fuck memoir is a must-read manifesto of a game-changing outsider shaking up the pale, stale males in the corridors of power.' Sarah Malik, journalist 'Too Migrant, Too Muslim, Too Loud takes a heavy hammer to the overworn notion of Australia's good migrant and from the fragments builds something far more powerful. In her spirited political memoir, Senator Mehreen Faruqi takes us on a tour of her diverse life experiences-from touching and formative memories of her migration from Pakistan to Australia, her work as an engineer, standing up for women's rights in parliament, and her passion for racial, animal and environmental justice, while having to withstand plenty of abuse and detractors along the way. She is, in fact, the best kind of migrant, showing us what love of country truly means: a life dedicated to public service, speaking truth to power and fighting for a better future.' Monica Tan, journalist and author of Stranger Country 'In her passionate autobiography, Mehreen Faruqi lays bare the truth of navigating politics in Australia while being a woman of colour. This is an unapologetic account of one woman's mission to make this country a fairer place to live.' Saman Shad, journalist and writer 'The idea of Mehreen Faruqi frightens the establishment. The actual Mehreen Faruqi is a gift, a woman of great integrity and purpose, who follows through on the egalitarian ideals of this country like few others. This country needs her. She also swears like a sailor.' Tim Levinson/Urthboy, hip-hop artist and producer 'This is the impassioned insider's account of the state of Australian politics by one of our most trail-blazing politicians. Mehreen Faruqi's story is one of conviction and determination to improve society, in spite of the cascade of political games and discrimination she has faced. At times blistering, Faruqi holds up a mirror to the Australian political landscape and asks all of us, How much longer will we accept this? ' Susan Carland, author of Fighting Hislam 'An authentic and powerful voice for human rights, social justice and multiculturalism.' Tim Soutphommasane, former Race Discrimination Commissioner
