Overview

A memoir of race, resilience, and radical self-acceptance. The World Where I Belong: My Quest for Identity As a Black Woman in White Skin is a compelling, lyrical memoir by Niedre M. Heckman, a Black woman born with albinism, who has spent a lifetime navigating societal perceptions, racial constructs, and the yearning to belong. From her childhood in Los Angeles to her professional achievements in science and global public health, Niedre reflects on the painful and empowering experiences that shaped her identity: bullying, colorism, disability, loss, and triumph. She writes with clarity and heart about being Black yet perceived as white, and the emotional tightrope this imposed, from being excluded by her own community to feeling invisible to others. Each chapter reveals a different thread of her journey: family, friendship, education, love, and legacy, all tied together by a quiet but unwavering determination to define herself on her own terms. For readers seeking to understand what it means to belong when you've always stood apart, this memoir offers healing, inspiration, and the reminder that who you are is already enough. This book is for anyone who has ever felt unseen, unheard, or misunderstood. You belong just as you are.

Reviews

""The book resonated with me, as a Mexican American. For instance at 10 years old, I was called a ""Beaner"" without understanding its meaning, which led me to make excuses for my ethnicity in an attempt to fit in. Being a musician was my way of finding acceptance among my peers. I believe this book is essential reading for anyone who has felt different, bullied, or marginalized."" Joey Delgado ""The book touches on so many relatable topics, starting with school days, family dynamics, dealing with albinism as a Black woman, marriage, healing, and even practical career advice. What stood out most was getting to know Niedre's humanity through her story. The concise steps for a promotion that her mentor shared were a great addition and so actionable. It's a powerful and inspiring read!"" Subhi Saadeh ""Niedre holds many unusual attitudes and mental frameworks that have allowed her to soar above crushing adversity and turn around to give back to others. Any student of humanity or person looking to live an actualized, happy life will want to learn her techniques as revealed in this frank and interesting memoir."" Light through Leaves ""For anyone who has walked into a room, and had to either overcome a perception about others or themselves, this book is for you! It will make you rethink how to approach people and situations with compassion and empathy. It also provides insight into career paths and advancement."" Karen Drucker ""It took me back to similar experiences in my life. Am I a black woman in white skin? No, but everyone, at some point(s) in their lives have feelings of not belonging for various reasons, mostly because you were unique and didn't really fit in with the norm."" Musicallyyours
