The right to drinking water in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Overview

Since water is essential to life and a number of social services, it should be easily accessible to all human beings. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for example, the right to access drinking water is enshrined in article 48 of the constitution of February 18, 2006, as amended on January 20.The effective exercise of this right is considered an important indicator in the fight against poverty.Nevertheless, it has to be said that both before and after the constitution came into force, access to drinking water remains a major daily concern for many Congolese, and a real headache for the inhabitants of the town of Kikwit. The purpose of this study was to identify the constraints to access, while proposing appropriate solutions to these constraints, particularly those linked to price and the distance between the household and the tap.
