Overview

To cook a meal for others—with thoughtfulness about the ingredients and care for the technique—can be the ultimate act of sharing. Gathering around the table opens people up, sparks meaningful connections, and builds community. This was one of the key principles that led Kimbal Musk to open The Kitchen restaurant twenty years ago, and it remains at the core of the restaurant’s mission as it has grown to have locations in four cities—Boulder, Denver, Chicago, and soon Austin. Now Musk shares more than 100 recipes for all of The Kitchen’s most beloved dishes so that you can make them at home. Here are signature creations such as the legendary Tomato Soup, Cast Iron Roasted Chicken, and Sticky Toffee Pudding, as well as more recent favorites like Crispy Cauliflower Korma, Grilled Ranch Steak with Romesco and Catalan Spinach, and Tahini Mousse Cake. The Kitchen is an American bistro serving seasonal shared plates with many global influences. Peruvian chiles pop up often, homemade naan serves as a base for shareable dishes, and miso gives a lift to several veggies. Reflecting the restaurant’s history as a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement, many of the recipes include variations according to the season. In fact, the book empowers the home cook to feel free to adapt at every turn. An ample chapter on sauces and toppings provides an arsenal of flavor boosters to punch up all of your cooking, and many dishes have components that you can mix and match with others throughout the book. There are plenty of quick and easy recipes that are sure to become regulars in your weeknight rotation, as well as some spectacular showstoppers to serve at your next party. As a bonus, the majority of the recipes link out to videos that show you how to accomplish key kitchen hacks. With all these practical features, this book is bound to become a trusted companion on the kitchen shelf to turn to time and again—as well as one that will inspire you to cook for your community.

Reviews

"“Kimbal Musk is a cheerful crusader for real food."" —The Wall Street Journal “Kimbal is a compelling speaker. . . . I applaud his efforts to educate kids in America. [He recognizes] that if we’re going to change our approach to eating in this country, it’s about showing kids where food comes from, how to grow it, how to prepare it.” —Michael Pollan, author and food activist “Kimbal Musk is part of a new generation of activists leading the way out of the food crisis of rampant obesity with a real food revolution. He’s working to transform the way we produce and consume food.” —World Economic Forum “Kimbal Musk has been waging his own battle against industrialized food. If Elon Musk is building a clean energy empire, then Kimbal Musk is building the sustainable food empire to match.” —Alexander Kauffman, Huffington Post “Kimbal Musk is on a mission to revolutionize how Americans eat.” —CBS News “Kimbal Musk takes the tech entrepreneur ethos and applies it to food. He is a health-conscious chef and restaurant owner with his own sense of mission about subjects close to his heart: linking people’s food to their communities and tackling childhood obesity.” —Andy Meek, The Guardian “Gregarious, open, and confident, Mr. Musk is a lot of fun to hang around with. . . . He wants to create a network of business, educational, and agricultural ventures big enough to swing the nation’s food system back to one based on healthy, local food grown on chemical-free farms. . . . Like a politician on the stump, Mr. Musk travels extensively to pound home the message that Americans—especially millennials —are demanding real food and rejecting what he calls industrial food. This year alone, he is on track to speak at nearly 50 food and business conferences.” —Kim Severson, The New York Times “Kimbal Musk wants to transform food production from something big and industrial to being more local and organic. Step one, he believes, is to get kids interested—and he’s created a revolutionary way to do it.” —Craig Ferguson, comedian and former host of The Late Late Show on CBS “It’s a tall order for Musk and The Kitchen to really change the food culture of America, or even wean Memphis from the fare that Elvis gorged on in the Jungle Room. But Kimbal Musk is giving it a go, carrying on a culinary crusade that began a half decade ago, with a flipped inner tube in Jackson Hole.” —Steven Levy, WIRED “Kimbal Musk is on a quest to disrupt big food. I knew I had to have him on my show when I was speaking at SXSW and the audience was empty because Kimbal was giving a talk at the same time.” —Dave Asprey, author of The Bulletproof Diet “Kimbal Musk and his restaurant co-founder Hugo Matheson are the farm-to-table founding fathers.” —Bruce Shonfeld, Entrepreneur magazine “Kimbal Musk could be an important bridge to bring the generational rifts that pits old-liners who shun aspects of emerging food science against a new wave of food disrupters who haven’t embraced the roles that history, flavor, and pleasure play.” —Dr. Garrett Broad, an assistant professor at Fordham University"

"""Unfussy, soulful cooking with a focus on sourcing, good ingredients, and community. . . . The vegetable chapter has all the dishes I want to eat.""  —Melanie Hansche, Food and Wine “Celebrating the sense of community at his much-loved restaurant, this beautiful collection of recipes is just perfect for sharing with family and friends. Nice one, Kimbal.” —Jamie Oliver   “Kimbal understands the true power of good food and the importance of coming together around the table. This cookbook offers recipes to feed both the body and the soul.” —Chef José Andrés   “I love The Kitchen for its community ethos, commitment to excellence, self-assured design, and mostly, for the uncommonly good taste that is expressed in every element of the restaurant. So it’s no surprise that The Kitchen Cookbook does the exact same thing in book form—chock-full of winning recipes that you can actually cook at home, each of which will stop dinner conversation, not because of their fanciful plating, but rather because you’ll just find the flavors to be so damned pure and good.” —Danny Meyer, founder of Union Square Hospitality Group and Shake Shack   “Flip through this joyful cookbook and you'll feel what I felt—inspiration, gratitude, a sense of what it means to bring community to the table. Even better, you’ll want to cook. Because these recipes, like Kimbal himself, aren’t trying to wow you with bells and whistles. There are no tweezers, no garnishing sprig of this or that, no souped-up gadgets (the Kitchen doesn’t have an ice cream machine, but you better believe there's ice cream, page 272). Kimbal Musk is a gourmet practicing as a gourmand; perfection is not the point, deliciousness is.” —Dan Barber, chef and restaurateur   “Kimbal cares deeply about making good food accessible to more people. That commitment shines through in this collection of delicious recipes. His cookbook celebrates a true sense of community and the value of gathering with friends and family to celebrate love, life, and nourishing food.” —John Mackey, CEO of Love.Life and Co-Founder of Whole Foods Market   “The Kitchen Cookbook is a masterpiece of culinary delights. No trade-off here between yumminess and healthfulness. If there is only one cookbook in your kitchen, this must be it!” —Mark Hyman, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Young Forever   “Kimbal Musk brings joy, inspiration, and deliciousness to cooking. He also is passionate about sourcing from the best farmers to bring nourishment to everyone involved. I will never forget the first time I ate at The Kitchen and could taste the love. This cookbook makes it possible to share the love at home.” —Maria Rodale, author of Love, Nature, Magic"
