Overview

No one in Macon, GA, would have ever suspected Anjette Lyles of being a murderer. She was perceived as a charming and friendly woman who was highly regarded in the community. During her time as a waitress in her husband's restaurant, and eventually taking over the business, customers were drawn to her charm and genuine kindness. It is truly shocking how Anjette's reputation transformed from being an ordinary person to a notorious criminal. Anjette's life took a dark twist when she married her second husband, Ben Lyles, in 1947. Over the next few years, she methodically poisoned him, her mother-in-law, Julia, and her daughter, Marcia, with arsenic, all for financial gain. Every death was meticulously orchestrated, as Anjette skillfully manipulated the circumstances to give the illusion of natural causes for her victims. Anjette's actions eventually caught up with her when suspicions arose following the unexpected deaths of her loved ones. In spite of her efforts to conceal her actions, which even included a failed attempt to harm a crucial witness, Anjette was apprehended, brought to trial, and ultimately found guilty of murder in 1958. She received a death sentence, but it was later changed to life imprisonment. Anjette's case continues to be a haunting and puzzling one in Georgia's history, prompting contemplation about the existence of malevolence and the capacity for deceit within seemingly ordinary people. Her story serves as a warning about the perils of avarice, manipulation, and the hidden malevolence that can lie beneath a charismatic exterior.
