The Architecture of Proteins

Overview

Proteins are the molecular machines that drive nearly every biological process, from catalyzing reactions to providing structural support. Their complex three-dimensional structures determine their functions and interactions within cells. The Architecture of Proteins covers the principles of protein folding, structure determination, and functional organization. The book discusses primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures, along with techniques such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. It also explores protein misfolding diseases, enzyme mechanisms, and protein engineering applications. By linking structure to biological activity, it offers readers a deep appreciation of how the architecture of proteins underpins the dynamic complexity of life.

Author Information

Dr. Parmod Singh is a highly accomplished forensic scientist and researcher specializing in craniofacial anthropology, DNA phenotyping, forensic biology, and facial reconstruction. He currently serves as a Senior Scientific Officer at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Haryana, where he plays a pivotal role in crime scene examination, evidence analysis, expert reporting, and training law enforcement personnel. His career reflects a rare blend of scientific precision, research innovation, and hands-on forensic expertise. Dr. Singh earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in 2022, with a landmark thesis titled ""Study of Craniofacial Profile from 6 to 18 Years of Age,"" conducted using MRI imaging and facial anthropometry. His work provided crucial insights into craniofacial growth patterns, offering practical applications in forensic identification, plastic surgery, pediatric healthcare, and age estimation. He completed his Master of Science in Forensic Science from Kurukshetra University, graduating as a Gold Medalist and University Rank Holder, and his Bachelor of Science (Honors) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi. In addition to his academic excellence, Dr. Singh has built extensive laboratory and field experience through multiple roles. As a Research Associate at PGIMER Chandigarh, he worked on advanced projects such as DNA phenotyping, genotyping analysis, and craniofacial reconstruction, while also contributing to animal-model research on stroke, epilepsy, myocardial infarction, and spinal cord injury. His grant-writing contributions have supported major research initiatives funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Science & Technology, and PGIMER. Dr. Singh possesses exceptional technical expertise across multiple forensic domains, including DNA profiling, fingerprint development, anthropometry, 2D and 3D facial reconstruction, skull-photo superimposition, serology, microscopy, and instrumental analysis. His skills in advanced computational tools—such as Cliniface, ImageJ, DICOM Viewer, GraphPad Prism, and various PCR and imaging software—strengthen his analytical capabilities. A passionate educator, he has taught forensic medicine, anthropology, DNA profiling, and fingerprint examination to medical, paramedical, and law students. He also serves as an invited lecturer for UGC-NET forensic science preparation, earning recognition for his clarity and depth of instruction. Dr. Singh has presented his research widely at national and international conferences, earning multiple Best Paper and Best Poster Awards. His publications include peer-reviewed articles in reputed journals and book chapters on forensic identification technologies.
