Sustainable Rural Development Projects: Diversity and Opportunities from Principles of Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems

Overview

This reprint compiles peer-reviewed articles that synthesize more than nine years of collaboration within the Metauniversity for Sustainable Development. The initiative began in 2016 when FAO selected the GESPLAN Research Group of the Polytechnic University of Madrid to promote the Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (RAI) across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain. Since then, 46 universities and 52 agrifood companies, associations, and cooperatives from 12 countries have built a shared academic and institutional commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility. The first two articles establish the conceptual foundation. The first defines the Metauniversity as a ""university of universities"" integrating three pillars: the RAI principles, the research university paradigm, and the Metauniversity concept. The second article, through the Working with People (WWP) model, provides empirical validation in seven countries, demonstrating how rural development projects aligned with the RAI principles strengthen sustainable rural development outcomes. The remaining contributions present applied experiences in Peru, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, and Spain, built through collaboration among cooperatives, rural communities, universities, governments, companies, agrifood enterprises, and food banks. These studies show that the RAI principles and the WWP model become truly transformative when translated into shared learning and collective action.
