Author Information

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was one of India's greatest literary figures, a poet, novelist, playwright, philosopher, composer, and social reformer whose works profoundly shaped modern Indian literature and thought. Born in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in a distinguished Bengali family, Tagore began writing poetry at a very young age and soon emerged as a powerful voice in Bengali literature. His writings include poems, short stories, novels, essays, songs, and plays that explore themes of human relationships, spirituality, nature, social reform, and the cultural identity of India. In 1913, he became the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature for his collection of poems Gitanjali, bringing global recognition to Indian literature. Tagore was also an influential educator and founded the famous university Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan, envisioning a place where the best of Eastern and Western traditions could meet in harmony. A prolific composer, he wrote thousands of songs known as Rabindra Sangeet, and notably composed the national anthems of both India (Jana Gana Mana) and Bangladesh (Amar Shonar Bangla). Through his timeless literary works and visionary ideas, Tagore continues to inspire readers across the world and remains a towering figure in world literature and culture.
