Sports Law in Greece and Cyprus: A Comparative Study of International, European and American Law

Overview

This book offers a comprehensive and systematic analysis of sports law from antiquity to the contemporary globalised legal order. Beginning with the ancient Olympic Games (Olympiacoi Agones) as Panhellenic institutions, the book traces the evolution of sport and its regulation from Classical Greece, through the Hellenistic and Roman periods, to the revival of the modern Olympic Movement under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee. The study presents sports law as a modern, multi-sectoral field encompassing constitutional, administrative, civil, commercial, employment and criminal law. With particular emphasis on Greece and Cyprus, it examines the constitutional protection of sport, the exercise of regulatory authority by public bodies and sports federations, and the balance between state supervision and the autonomy (self-governance) of sporting organisations. The book analyses in depth the legal structure of amateur associations and professional sports companies, broadcasting and commercial rights, ticketing and betting, and dispute resolution before civil, administrative and arbitral bodies. Particular attention is devoted to employment relationships in sport — including professional athletes, coaches, referees and agents — alongside criminal law issues such as doping, match-fixing and violence in sports venues.Scholarly yet accessible, this volume is addressed to academics, practitioners, judges, sports administrators and students seeking a rigorous analysis of sports law in Greece and Cyprus. It concludes with reflections on the growing importance of the legal profession in the field of sports law and the challenges posed by the continued globalisation and commercialisation of sport.
