After working for several years in the Juvenile Justice System, Patrick's faith in the families he worked with was beginning to feel the strain. Many of the delinquents and their parents were extremely self-centered and apathetic to the feelings of their victims. No amount of caring, talking, or advice seemed to help them change. With Christmas nearing, their greediness seemed to magnify.In staying with his usual tradition, on Christmas Eve 2000, Patrick read Twas the Night Before Christmas to his own children. Lying in bed, after the presents had been wrapped, he was haunted by the thoughts of these families that wouldn't feel joy the following morning. They had lost the spirit of Christmas and had only a spirit of self-indulgence.He awoke on Christmas morning jokingly changing the stanzas of that famous poem. The idea of a Santa spreading grief rather than gifts was an intriguing one. All of his hard work didn't seem to make a difference; maybe Santa could do a better job...
