This rerelease of the authoritative and highly illustrated history of the Super Chief, from its beginning through Amtrak's 1971 takeover of passenger services, examines the train, its steam and diesel motive power, its rolling stock (including the famous Pleasure Dome lounge cars), and its four-star services. Dozens of black-and-white archival images and period color photography depict the trains as they carried captains of industry and working folks cross-country at 90 miles per hour. Also included are Santa Fe uniforms, dinnerware, terminals and stations, period advertisements, menus, route maps, and interior views of cars, all of which provide a dramatic visual account of train travel's decline throughout the century.
