Salahuddin's Smelly Encounter

Overview

Join young Salahuddin and his father on a fun day at the park, where an unexpected encounter in his favourite sandpit leads to an important lesson in Islamic teachings. Upset after discovering dog poo in the sand, Salahuddin turns to his father, who gently introduces him to the concept of Najis (ritually unclean) and the importance of staying clean in Islam. Through a catchy nursery rhyme with a familiar melody, Salahuddin quickly learns the steps of Wudhu (ablution), making it easy for Muslim kids to remember how to cleanse themselves before Salah (ritual prayer). He also learns about kindness towards animals and the responsibility of caring for the environment, including using water wisely and not wasting it. With vibrant illustrations and an engaging song, Salahuddin's Smelly Encounter is a delightful read for parents and kids alike. If you are looking for a Muslim children's book that entertains while reinforcing essential values, this story makes learning about Wudhu, cleanliness, and mindfulness both fun and meaningful. BONUS: Free activity page at the end to make this book personalised and extra special for your child.

Author Information

Umisaldo A. Khair was born in Australia and grew up in a little rural country town three hours' drive from Perth. She completed a Commerce Degree and worked in the Australian Public Sector for over a decade, before getting married and settling down. Umisaldo decided to leave her career to focus on motherhood when she had her first son, while also starting a small business from home to keep her mind engaged and active. Umisaldo began dabbling in writing some short fiction as a way to entertain her young child. She based her stories on themes that her toddler son was experiencing at the time-such as night terrors. Even though these stories were imperfect drafts, her son not only resonated with the events but absolutely adored them! She then partnered with her long-time best friend, who is also a published author, to help transform one of her child's favourite stories into a proper book for both her son and his peers to enjoy. Now no longer a toddler, but a growing child and student, there's nothing more heartwarming for Umisaldo than having her son-the very inspiration behind the books-read aloud the stories written for him to her. Raihanaty A. Jalil was born in Malaysia to Indonesian parents and moved to Australia before the age of three. She is an avid Jane Austen reader who spent her childhood lost in her vivid imagination, playing out made-up characters in her backyard. She has been writing poetry and stories since Primary School, inspired by classic poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and William Blake. She considers herself to be a jack of all trades and has led a very interesting life, taking on a variety of roles including poet, educator, entrepreneur, rapper and speaker. She believes that sharing her writing with others is akin to sharing a part of her soul. Raihanaty has read her work during Perth Festival Writers Week, at The Wheeler Centre for the Digital Writers' Festival and has sat on the board for Centre for Stories. Raihanaty has facilitated poetry workshops at the Australian Islamic College for Propel Youth Arts WA. Her creative non-fiction and short fiction has appeared in the anthologies, Wave After Wave and To Hold The Clouds (Centre for Stories, Australia).
