OverviewRichard the Lionheart and the Sultan Saladin are two very famous names from history. Both have been the subject of many words by those writing on both sides of the conflict known as the third crusade. Richard and Saladin had very different backgrounds, the former being born into a King's family, the latter being a son of a Kurdish mercenary. They both achieved great notoriety as respectively King of England and Sultan of Egypt and Syria. Richard seems to tower above most other Kings of England. He was born the third son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, reigned less than ten years, spent most of that time out of England and left no son and heir. Saladin rose from military commander to Sultan, won back Jerusalem from the Crusaders and founded his own dynasty, albeit it lasted less than 70 years following his death. Richard the Lionheart and the Sultan Saladin are fascinating characters and they lived extraordinary lives.
