Dr Jennifer Owen was an ecologist who lectured in universities and adult education centres. She also worked as a zoology museum curator. Her specialist subject area was hoverflies. In 2010 she was awarded the Ecological Engagement Award from the British Ecological Society and the Veitch Memorial Medal from the RHS for her work. Owen graduated in zoology from Oxford in 1958, followed by a PhD at the University of Michigan. In 1962 she moved to the University College of Makerere (now Makerere University), Uganda, and then to the University of Sierra Leone. It was in Sierra Leone that she first noticed that there seemed to be more wildlife in her garden than in the neighbouring forest. This prompted her, when she returned to a post at Leicester University in 1971, to wonder exactly what lived in her garden, and to begin a study that was to occupy the next 30 years.
