Brazil might well be a different country altogether had it, at certain decisive moments, taken the course that would have led it down a path quite distinct from the one we are following today. In reality, however, it was led to take paths that simultaneously promoted a model of growth which, rather than ensuring its autonomy and independence, entangled it in a web that condemned it to remain dependent and subordinate; and, for some of its regions, the notion of inequality and backwardness became its defining characteristic.
