Born in Chongqing, Sichuan, in 1956, in 1992, he was appointed Artistic Director of the First Guangzhou Biennial Art Fair, China's first art biennial. Has also authored several important publications, including A History of Art in 20th-Century China (2010); A History of Art in Twentieth-Century China (2013); and Storia dell'arte cinese dal XX al XXI secolo (2024). Currently, Lü is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History and Theory at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, as well as at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts.
