The painted postcard has many attractions, not least its portability – no need for an easel or large, unwieldy blocks or sheets of paper and probably only a pocket watercolour box. Back when I was selling art materials, we ordered postcard pads in 50s, such was their reliable popularity. A further advantage comes with the traceable outlines – actual size and no need to assemble or fold out a larger format. Geoff illustrates 15 compositions, from a path through autumn parkland to bluebells in spring as well as a snow-filled winter lane and a tree-backed farm. The ideas are simple but not simplistic and will give you a nice exercise with a variety of shapes, colours and techniques. Each subject is fully demonstrated, with plenty of steps and a full-page illustration of the result you’re aiming for. It’s just a shame that the reproduction seems more than a little muted – Geoff is not noted for his bright colours, but I think this is more than that and some of the detail is quite hard to see. For all that, this is an excellent idea and it’s to be hoped that further subjects are added in the not-too-distant future. -- Henry Malt * artbookreview.net * Lesley Linley is a master of washes and granulation and although the images in Ready to Paint Postcards: Mountains are simple, they also provide a lesson in simplification as well as the use of colour to define shape. You probably won't want to follow every exercise, but you might well marvel at the considerable technical expertise that has gone into them. As the days warm up, why not treat your creative self? -- Henry Malt * The Artist - March Issue * Author InformationLesley Linley has a background in Graphic Design but she learned about watercolour techniques entirely from books. Having discovered a love for the medium, she found she enjoyed sharing her skills and a career in teaching Adult Community Education began. Teaching left little time for her own painting until she moved to Skye. Here she opened a studio in order both to run classes and workshops for local people and visitors from the UK and overseas, and to spend more time painting for pleasure. Since returning to her home county of Derbyshire she has become a member of Peak District Artisans and exhibits with the group. She also continues to run workshops and give demonstrations. Lesley has featured in Skye Makers magazine and Paint & Draw magazine, and has written articles for Leisure Painter.
