OverviewThere is an ever increasing challenge of integrating heterogeneous networking technologies to provide homogeneous and ubiquitous multimedia services on pervasive computing devices. The book begins with an analysis of the current IP and ATM based QoS models. It then presents the architecture of two different QoS-mapping models for mapping individual flows and aggregated traffic classes of multimedia traffic across heterogeneous networks. The work is primarily focused on mapping IP traffic over ATM networks; however the core principle can be extended for other networking technologies as well. Results show that it can provide delay guarantees to continuous media traffic and throughput guarantees to data traffic. At the next stage, a novel architecture of an IP/ATM internetworking device has been presented for temporal mapping that employs the two mapping models and their queuing models based analytical solutions for providing delay guarantees. This demonstrates how analytical techniques could be integrated within the architecture of networking devices for efficient estimation of various resource requirements, and thus provides a road map for accurate resource prediction and mapping.
