Putting Success Into Succession: How Boards Turn a New CEO into a Lasting Success

Overview

Of all the responsibilities a board chair carries, none is more consequential than a CEO or Executive Director transition. It is the moment that shapes everything that follows, yet most boards face it without a roadmap. A failed leadership transition does more than drain organizational momentum. It fractures staff confidence, erodes stakeholder trust, and carries a devastating financial toll, with the hard dollar cost running up to 213% of the departing executive's annual salary. Putting Success into Succession is the practical guide every board chair at a mission-driven, board-governed organization needs to navigate this critical moment. Author Peggy Hiller delivers the roadmap she wishes had existed during her own executive transition, drawing on decades of organizational development and leadership experience to protect your organization's mission and future. What You Will Discover Inside: The Complete Transition Roadmap: Go beyond the search committee phase with an actionable blueprint for both your board and your new leader. Building Durable Trust: Establish structured check-ins that build real alignment and partnership before the first organizational crisis arrives. What Boards Get Wrong and Why: Understand the dynamics that derail even well-intentioned transitions, and what to do differently before they happen to yours. Phase-by-Phase Practical Tools: Navigate every critical milestone, from the months before the new leader walks in the door through their high-stakes first year. The search found the right person. This book makes them and your organization successful.
