Author Information

Junghwan Choi is currently working at Law School of DMU as Associate Professor. He joined DMU as Foreign Expert in the Spring of 2021. Based on his excellent research achievements, he was awarded ‘Xinghai Associate professorship’ from DMU since April 2023. He earned his Bachelor of Marine Engineering at Korea Maritime and Ocean University (Busan, South Korea) and his Master of Laws at Korea Maritime and Ocean University (Busan, South Korea). He also has a LL.M in International Maritime Law with Merit from Swansea University (Swansea, the United Kingdom), and Doctor of Philosophy in Law from the University of Exeter (Exeter, the United Kingdom). His main areas of expertise are Public Maritime Law, International Law of the Sea, International Marine Environmental Law, Marine Policy, and International Maritime Conventions (IMO Conventions). He has published research articles in internationally renowned journals such as Marine Policy, Ocean Development and International Law, Review of European, Comparative & International Environmental Law, The International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, etc. He was Research Fellow Specializing on the EU Maritime Industry, Maritime Cluster Networking in Korea (2017-2020). He is currently a Director of International Affairs, the Korea Institute of Maritime Law and Associate Editor, Journal of East Asia and International Law. In May 2022, Dr. Choi won ‘Young Scholar award’ from the Korea Institute of Maritime Law. Prior to joining DMU, he worked as teaching associate and lecturer at Korea Maritime and Ocean University(Busan, South Korea). Based on his experience, he has a special knowledge for Maritime Education and Training. Furthermore, he has a qualified Second-Class Engineer Certificate and has been aboard merchant ships more than 5 years including as the First Engineer at Hanjin shipping co., Ltd.
