OverviewOur study analyzes post-electoral conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the 2006 and 2023 elections. Elections, the foundation of representative democracy, enable people to choose their leaders on the basis of societal projects. However, their competitive nature can give rise to tensions. Poorly managed, they can destabilize the state, as illustrated by the violence observed after these two elections. Thus, instead of consolidating democracy, elections have become a source of conflict. The aim of this study is to identify the causes of post-election crises, and to suggest ways of remedying them. It is based on a dialectical approach, supported by observation and documentary analysis. The results show that the proclamation of results is often a trigger for conflict. The study therefore highlights the need to reinforce electoral civic-mindedness through nationwide awareness-raising campaigns.
