Piper at the Gates of Dusk: A gripping dystopian tale of bravery and brotherhood for fans of THE HUNGER GAMES and PROJECT HAIL MARY from the author of A Monster Calls

Overview

“Ness doesn't just tell stories - he illuminates the human heart.” Cassandra Clare “Heartbreaking and brutally human.” Neal Shusterman, author of Scythe In New World, there were no secrets. Everyone could hear everyone else's thoughts in a constant, overwhelming Noise. Then a cure came – one that the second generation took from birth. Peace descended, wars ended, communication was silenced. Until now . . . A sci-fi, dystopian, heart-pounding adventure like no other, by one of the world’s most beloved young-adult writers and author of A Monster Calls. This is a brand-new story set in the world of the multi-award-winning, globally bestselling Chaos Walking series - a compelling read for new and existing fans. Brothers Ben and Max have never really gotten on, each being more like one of their parents – Todd and Viola. But when something is spotted in the night sky - something that’s bringing back dreams of Noise, dreams of terror - the brothers will have to come together. Danger is coming and the family will be tested like never before. For fans of The Hunger Games and action-packed dystopia as well as fantasy worlds such as those by Philip Pullman. The hardback book contains stunning illustrations by Jim Kay, the award-winning artist of A Monster Calls. “A creative science-fiction rollercoaster . . . An absorbing, deeply human tale of finding common ground in the perpetual struggle to do the next right thing.” Kirkus Reviews

Reviews

Piper at the Gates of Dusk is rich in action, intrigue and politics. There is a desperate attempt to save the only world they now have and the only world the young people have ever known. Patrick Ness has a sharp eye for teenage fears and hopes. His teen-aged protagonists struggle to be heard over overbearing adults who brush them off as too young to have valid solutions to the problems presented. I raced through this book with its never ending action and intrigue. With themes of activism, social justice, racism, disability and gender dysphoria Piper at the Gates of Dusk is a book for our times. * theburgeoningbookshelf via instagram * The world design is fascinating in this one. A unique blend of speculative fiction and sci-fi, Ness keeps you on your toes throughout. One thing I really loved about the book was the transgender representation. You learn through careful revelations that our character may not have always been perceived the way that he is now, but there is no uncertainty around who he is. * fangtastical_fiction via instagram * A return to New World that those who are familiar with, will be drawn back into featuring it's signature chaotic universe. It was a refreshing change of pace with new main characters. In saying that it was nice to see that some of the original characters were still present. I'll admit my favourite aspect of this book was, the vivid writing readers of Patrick's works will be familiar with. As for me I've always found his writing style, to be what I've enjoyed most about his books. For me this was a read that was no different. Overall for me as a reader I think it's a book that for those who are, already familiar with and or are new to this world will get something out of it. I'd recommend adding this to your TBR or shelves, if you're a fan of Patrick's or are wanting to explore the world of Chaos Walking. * peculiarly_bookish via instagram *

A quick glance at Goodreads shows how excited his fans are for this new story and they will not be disappointed: Piper at the Gates of Dusk is brave, exciting, political and fierce. -- Charlotte Eyre * The Bookseller *

Hugely exciting and satisfyingly frightening, Piper at the Gates of Dusk is also political in its reminder of how easily we turn against one another. It is also a truly inclusive novel. -- Charlotte Eyre * The Bookseller * A quick glance at Goodreads shows how excited his fans are for this new story and they will not be disappointed: Piper at the Gates of Dusk is brave, exciting, political and fierce. -- Charlotte Eyre * The Bookseller * This book absolutely floored me. I was shamefully late to reading Choas Walking, despite the fact that I had read every other of Ness’ books and been deeply in love with them. When I read the trilogy back in late 2020 I was furious that I had denied myself the beauty for so long. It quickly became one of my all time favourite trilogies. I fell in love with the world. The characters. All of it. And so to be back there… oh what a joy it was! * NetGalley Reviewer *
