Philosophy of Teachers' Epistemic Beliefs for Changing Pedagogy: A Paradigm Shift to Competency-Based Education offers pedagogical insights into the paradigm shift intended by 21st-century competency-based education. The authors, informed by both policy and research on education, argue that implementation of competency-based education requires anchoring pedagogical explorations on the epistemology of a competency-based curriculum. Research in personal epistemology reveals that teachers enact espoused epistemic beliefs in classroom pedagogical practice. Teachers must be empowered to change their pedagogical competencies by drawing their attention to their default epistemic beliefs which must be replaced by what is aligned with the epistemology of a competency-based curriculum.The book makes the case that curriculum reforms necessarily imply pedagogical reforms. That is, pedagogy is parasitical on the epistemology of curriculum. The book exposes the underpinning epistemology of competency-based curriculum in Kenya and has gone further to derive epistemic beliefs that teachers should acquire to facilitate their efforts at reforming their pedagogy aligned to Competency-based education.We live in a time of radical revolution where knowledge is a critical factor in all sectors of society. The education sector is charged with the responsibility of empowering learners as creators of knowledge. Learning how to learn is a key competency in adapting, utilizing and experimenting with novel conceptions of knowledge which includes changing teachers' epistemic beliefs and attitudes. Author Information

Dr. Michael Kariuki holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Philosophy of Education from Moi University. He obtained a Master of Philosophy (Hons), Bachelor of Philosophy (Hons) and Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (distinction), all from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He also holds a diploma in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Christ the King Major Seminary, Nyeri, Kenya.His area of research and publication includes philosophy of education, pedagogy, epistemology and African philosophy of education.Dr. Kariuki is currently the coordinator of the School of Education at the Nairobi Campus of Moi University. He is a member of the faculty in the School of Education in the Department of Educational Foundations at Moi University. Misia M. M. Kadenyi holds a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil) in Education Foundations from Moi University, a Master of Education from Kenyatta University and a Bachelor of Education (Hons) from the University of Nairobi. She is a distinguished Professor of Education at Maasai Mara University.Prof. Kadenyi was the first appointed professor at Maasai Mara University and the first Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic, Research, and Student Affairs. She also served as the first Dean of the School of Education Arts and Social Sciences and the first Dean of the School of Education at Maasai Mara University.Professor Kadenyi has been teaching at the university level since 1988 and has supervised hundreds of postgraduate and undergraduate students. She has published over 100 chapters in books and articles in refereed journals, both nationally and internationally. She has also served as an External Examiner for Makerere University, Egerton University, Kenyatta University, and Kisii University. Currently, she is serving as an External Examiner for the Great Lakes University of Kisumu and Bomet University College.
