Overview

A modern superhero epic from the minds of Tom Peyer (THE WRONG EARTH) and Alan Robinson (PLANET OF THE NERDS). Penultiman, The Next-To-Last-Stage In Human Evolution, is the greatest, best-looking, and most admired super-hero in the world-so how can he stop hating himself? Only his android understudy, Antepenultiman, may hold the answer. We've seen characters who represent the ultimate stage of human potential, but I don't think we've met any who are just a little worse than the best, says writer Tom Peyer. Imagine the anxiety of being so advanced-only to be outclassed. That's PENULTIMAN. A fun take on the Captain Marvel-style wholesome superhero, with notes of the mournful loss of family and home we often see in Superman. Except, instead of an 8-year-old boy or an alien sent far from home to avoid a cataclysmic disaster, Penultiman's exiled from 90,019 BCE to our time to live out his days...Peyer and Robinson blend Golden and Silver-Age sensibilities in this story while poking gentle fun at the tropes that make superheroes tick. -Multiversity Comics A really interesting comic... definitely pick it up. -Comic News Insider

Reviews

Penultiman #1 is an interesting comic with what feels like a new take on the examination of the superhero ... Peyer infuses the comic with a lot of humor. ...That humorous tone is helped by the art of Alan Robinson who's joined by Lee Loughridge on color and Rob Steen with lettering. ... It's definitely a comic to keep an eye on and might be one that gets folks buzzing. -GRAPHIC POLICY In Penultiman, Peyer plays with the dueling idea of a superhero's burden versus responsibility, and he toys with the assumption of a superhero as a better version of ourselves. All the while, Robinson and Loghridge complement the script with a silver age art style that works well enough to throw the reader off guard compared to the existential dilemma conjured by the narrative. -PANEL PATTER Both funny and compelling... By starting with a baseline understanding of superheroics that we can all get behind, and then throwing the rulebook out the window almost immediately, Peyer and Robinson allow themselves to skip all the predictable bits of worldbuilding we might expect from another new superhero book. Instead they aim for unpredictable worldbuilding, propelling us headlong through the story with Peyer's lean and witty script and Robinson's delightful, classic-yet-singular art. ... I can't wait to see where this playful new series goes next. -SYFY WIRE AHOY is onto another winner with Penultiman #1.... Penultiman hits some poignantly existential notes for a comic about a superhero that hails from the 91st century. Don't let the colorful characters like Zev Zolo tell you otherwise: this is a thought-provoking comic. ... It's impossible to talk about this comic without heaping praise onto Alan Robinson. There's a Silver Age appeal to Penultiman's design, and Robinson manages to play up the larger than life aspects of the character while giving him emotional depth. ... Penutliman's existence feels like something to be grateful for after the summer of 2020. ... This is a series to follow. -ADVENTURES IN POOR TASTE So smartly written... extremely interesting and at times very poignant... I am thrilled by the way this is being told. The story & plot development...is impeccably rendered. ... The interiors here are amazing. I have always been a fan of Alan's work and he's got one of the most amazing comic book style illustrations I have ever seen. ... Ahoy along with Tom and Alan are all still at the top of their game. ... Such a joy to read... this is why comics are made in the first place. -READING WITH A FLIGHT RING

Author Information

This slope-shouldered industry veteran was a long-running writer on DC's Legion of Super-Heroes, a founding editor at their Vertigo imprint, and the proud writer of their worst-selling, award-losing series Hourman. He has since written enough major characters to fill one of those hyper-populated super-hero posters where you don't know who to look at first. Today he happily writes and edits AHOY Comics from his Ditkoesque office in Downtown Syracuse, NY. Alan has been drawing comics professionally for more than ten years, working for IDW Publishing, Dark Horse and Beyond Reality Media, in titles such as Back to the Future, V-Wars, Star Wars, Warden, Terminator and Secret Battles of Genghis Khan.
