Ovicidal and Oviposition Activity of Essential Oils from Seed of Azadirachta Indica (Azadirachtin)

Overview

The mosquito Culex pipiens L, a widely distributed and abundant species, is notably recognized for its role as a bridge vector in transmitting the West Nile virus from avian hosts to humans. This research was conducted to evaluate the toxicological impact of Azadirachtin on Culex pipiens eggs and to explore its repercussions on the development of larvae, pupae, and adult mosquitoes under controlled laboratory conditions. The study assessed the ovicidal activity by exposing the eggs to varying concentrations of Azadirachtin for a 24-hour period. The results demonstrated a significant decline in egg hatching rates, with a reduction of 31.41% at 1 mg/L and a remarkable 91.51% at 0.125 mg/L of Azadirachtin. Mortality rates increased in tandem with higher concentrations of Azadirachtin. Furthermore, larvae and pupae displayed extended developmental phases when originating from eggs treated with Azadirachtin, with durations of 4.55 days at 0.125 mg/L and 7.66 days at 1 mg/L during the initial larval stage. Malformation percentages showed an inverse relationship with Azadirachtin concentration. In contrast, the adult stage exhibited a noteworthy decrease in total eggs laid, hatchability percentage, and longevity. These findings strongly indicate that Azadirachtin holds substantial promise for effectively managing Culex pipiens mosquitoes.
