Overview

2016 Silver Falchion Finalist--YA Fiction Ages 14]Mord McGhee's wonderfully wise 'Old Flames and Heroes' is the perfect coming of age tale. A boy and his father take a road trip together along the Historic Niagara Highway to bond and search for Great Lake monsters. Along the way, our young hero Oliver copes with the real-life loss of his mother by envisioning a world of fantasy she inspired. Behind the journey, Oliver's father has questions. Desperately frightened questions. He takes the summer off to spend with his son, traveling the road leading to the possibility of a parent's worst fear: has my child inherited cancer?Mord McGhee paints a beautiful portrait of an American family facing the worst, as the best. He tells the tale through life's ups and downs, dealing with loss and rift created by a family tragedy. With humor, luck, love, and lake monsters. He also encourages readers to find the true meaning of the little blue sun which suddenly appears in Oliver's sky, raising the concerns and setting the adventure in motion. In a starred review, world-renowned adventurer Adam Davies notes, Mord McGhee's 'Old Flames and Heroes' is a great addition to the genre (young adult fantasy). A literary masterpiece with meanings unique to each reader, adult or child. And McGhee's message is simple, fun. It captures the balance of what's scary to a child and his parents, while through it all making it easy to laugh and believe in happy endings.'Old Flames and Heroes' is wondrous gift for readers of all ages, who like to laugh and cry. In another starred review by famed cryptozoologist and Director of the International Cryptozoology Museum, Loren Coleman says, We measure a celebration, beginning anywhere. This one seems as good as any other. If you are a Fortean, don't know you are or want to be one, take delight today in a new uniquely intellectual American book by Mord McGhee.
