Overview

John Seibert Farnsworth's delightful notes are not only about nature, but from nature as well. In Nature Beyond Solitude, he lets us peer over his shoulder as he takes his notes. We follow him to a series of field stations where he teams up with scientists, citizen scientists, rangers, stewards, and grad students engaged in long-term ecological study, all the while scribbling down what he sees, hears, and feels in the moment. With humor and insight, Farnsworth explores how communal experiences of nature might ultimately provide greater depths of appreciation for the natural world. In the course of his travels, Farnsworth visits the Hastings Natural History Reservation, the Santa Cruz Island Reserve, the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest, the North Cascades Institute's Environmental Learning Center, and more.

Reviews

I keep saying that what we need are stories from the original real world, from what, in our estrangement from nature, is called 'the field.' And here they are...Farnsworth has found, and shares with us: great places, fine people, and the right words. -- Carl Safina, author of Beyond Words

Author Information

A lifelong student of literary natural history, John Seibert Farnsworth taught environmental writing and literature at Santa Clara University. He holds a PhD from the University of Stirling, in Scotland, and masters degrees from Antioch and Stanford universities. For more than a decade, his signature course, Writing Natural History, culminated with a sea kayak expedition to the Isla Espiritu Santo archipelago of Baja California during spring break. In addition to being an avid sea kayaker, Dr. Farnsworth is a retired scuba instructor and a dedicated birder. His current research focuses on how long-term ecological studies foster community. Thomas Lowe Fleischner is a naturalist, conservation biologist, and Executive Director of the Natural History Institute, as well as Faculty Emeritus at Prescott College, where he taught interdisciplinary environmental studies for almost three decades. John Patrick Walsh made an auspicious debut as Phil Mickelson's caddy for the audiobook of the popular golf memoir One Magical Sunday and has since narrated numerous titles in the inspirational, business, and American history categories. Favorite stage and television credits include the Player King in Ethos Theatre Company's production of Hamlet and the Police Chaplain in ABC's General Hospital. John lives with his wife and two sons in New Canaan, Connecticut, where he founded VoiceOverWalsh, LLC.
