My Nature Notebook: Adventures for the Senses, Ages 7-12

Overview

My Nature Notebook is most effective when delivered alongside the accompanying My Nature Notebook Facilitator’s Guide. My Nature Notebook helps children aged 7–12 discover the simple joys of being outside and invites children to connect with nature through their senses. The sketchbook format offers carefully crafted ‘invitations’. These are gentle prompts which guide children to connect with nature using creativity and personal expression. Through engagement with these invitations, children will deepen their connection with nature and themselves, and appreciate that nature can be noticed, even in unexpected places. Most pages are designed to be taken outside and completed in situ, although some can be completed inside too. As children move through their notebook, they will build a repertoire of evidenced-based self-regulation strategies, reflect on how their body and mind respond to being in nature, and create a deep sense of reciprocity with the natural world. Spending time in nature offers children many benefits for their bodies, minds, and hearts. This book offers a fresh twist on creative, nature-based experiences, and, above all, nurtures a lifelong love of the natural world.

Reviews

“In this unique resource, Claire offers a clear and compassionate framework that encourages children and young people, alongside their parents and carers, to explore emotions, tune into their senses, and communicate openly. Through this process, feelings are gently channelled into forming a deep and lasting connection with the natural world. This book will be an invaluable resource for anyone seeking effective and accessible ways to help young people understand their place in the world. Simple yet insightful, it provides a powerful approach to nurturing a meaningful relationship with nature, a timely and hopeful remedy for a generation that increasingly feels anxious and disconnected from it.” - Martin Foakes, Chair of Outdoor Forum for South East Asia Schools and Independent Outdoor Education Consultant
