My Home Field Advantage

Overview

New town. New team. Same football-loving heart. Every time his dad lands a new coaching job, Ace knows what comes next: packing boxes, saying goodbye to friends, and flying off to a brand-new town. It is never easy leaving behind the people and places he loves. But Ace is brave, and he has learned that the football field has a way of making anywhere feel like home. From the first morning of practice to the roar of a packed stadium on game day, Ace discovers that being a coach's kid means more than early mornings and late nights without Dad at the dinner table. It means sideline adventures, high-fives from players who feel like big brothers, and the chance to make friends who understand exactly what his life is like. But with every move comes the same big question: will this new place ever truly feel like his? My Home Field Advantage is a heartwarming picture book that celebrates the resilience, love, and unbreakable family bond at the center of a coaching household. Perfect for young sports fans ages 3 to 8, kids navigating big life changes, and every family that knows home is not always a place on a map. Sometimes home is wherever the field is.

Author Information

Nataly Bumphis is a football coach's daughter turned football coach's wife. She grew up immersed in the game, watching her father, Coach Bobby Williams, make history as the first Black head coach at Michigan State University. His legendary coaching career includes stops with the Detroit Lions, LSU, the Miami Dolphins, Alabama, and the Oregon Ducks. During his time at Alabama, Coach Williams helped lead the Crimson Tide to five national championships. Nataly's lifelong connection to football eventually led her to her husband, Coach Chad Bumphis, who currently serves as the wide receivers coach at the University of Utah. Together, they have journeyed through the college football ranks with coaching stops at Austin Peay State University, Central Michigan University, Mississippi State University, and the University of Utah, where Chad helped coach the Utes to back-to-back Pac-12 Championships. Having spent her entire life navigating the unique rhythms of coaching families, Nataly developed a passion for telling stories that reflect the emotional experiences often overlooked in sports culture. Inspired by the resilience, adaptability, and close-knit bonds formed through constant change, she wrote My Homefield Advantage, a heartwarming picture book that follows a young boy named Ace as he learns to embrace the challenges and adventures of life as a coach's kid. Drawing from her experiences as a sports storyteller and more than a decade working in college athletics communications and NFL Films, Nataly brings authenticity, warmth, and heart to every story she tells. She and Chad are raising their charismatic son, Ace, who is beginning his own journey as a coach's kid, while eagerly awaiting the arrival of their second son. Whether cheering from the sidelines, settling into a new city, or creating stories for children and families, Nataly is passionate about representation, emotional resilience, and celebrating the unique experiences of sports-connected homes.
