Reviews

Unbeatable and unbearable he might have been, but this new biography is also deeply uncomfortable for those who greatly admire this remarkable General - but Gary Mead significantly expands our understanding of Montgomery himself, his motivation and his genius -- GENERAL RICHARD DANNATT

Unbeatable and unbearable he might have been, but this new biography is also deeply uncomfortable for those who greatly admire this remarkable General - but Gary Mead significantly expands our understanding of Montgomery himself, his motivation and his genius -- GENERAL LORD RICHARD DANNATT, former Chief of the General Staff This brilliant book – the best written about Monty – shows how profound flaws that would have condemned a lesser general were used to turn him into precisely the commander that Britain needed. Deeply-researched, highly insightful and extremely well written, this book contains all anyone needs to know about Britain’s most consequential soldier of the Second World War -- ANDREW ROBERTS, author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny A serious, thorough and compelling book -- ALLAN MALLINSON * Spectator * [Mead] argues that Montgomery was “the first British general systematically to use public relations” and “regarded broadcast coverage as an arm of warfare”. He makes these arguments successfully and, just as importantly, gives us a very entertaining read -- MARK URBAN * Sunday Times *
