His research interests include applied mathematics, especially nonlinear integrable systems, ultradiscrete systems, and mathematical medicine. He received his PhD from the University of Tokyo in 1986. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, and a lecturer in the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Tokyo, prior to joining the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, the University of Tokyo.
