Author Information

Dr. Ramy Harik, a Fulbright Scholar, is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Carolina and a researcher at the McNair Center for Aerospace Innovation and Research. He holds the position of Chief Manufacturing Officer at Nephron Pharmaceuticals, heading the engineering teams of Smart Manufacturing, Design and Robotics, Process Planning, Facility Planning, and Quality Standards. Ramy is the principal investigator of the neXt (new and emerging X technologies) research team. His education joins Mechanical Engineering (BS/MS), Automated Manufacturing (MS), and Industrial/Mechanical Engineering (PhD). He mainly teaches courses in Manufacturing, SmartManufacturing, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Prototyping, Computer-Aided Design, and Computer-Aided Manufacturing. Dr. Harik is Associate Editor of the SME Manufacturing Letters and CADA International Journal. He is the author of the Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing textbook by SAE. He was granted more than 7 million USD in funding from NASA, Boeing, National Institutes of Health, Toray, South Carolina Department of Commerce, South Carolina Research Authority, Siemens, Fokker Aerostructures, Dassault Aviation (funded as a student), and several other agencies. He is the recipient of the 2021 Distinguished Undergraduate Research award from the University of South Carolina, the 2018 Samuel Litman DistinguishedProfessor Award from the College of Engineering and Computing at the University of South Carolina, and the 2016 Outstanding Young Educator Award from Pi Tau Sigma Honor Society at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Harik was the chair of CAD'10; the ACE'15, ACE'16, and ACE'17 Technical Symposiums, and the PLM'16 International Conference and the technical co-chair of the largest composites show in the United States CAMX 2020. He was listed as among the 20 most influential professors in Smart Manufacturing by SME's Smart Manufacturing magazine in 2020. Dr. Joseph Elias Khoury is the global Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Methode Electronics, Inc. (NYSE: MEI). Prior to 2015, he was Vice President for the EMEA region, where, in 2000, he was tasked with achieving a European business growth strategy from a Germany base, turning this into one of the best performing sectors for the Group. Dr. Khoury was born in Lebanon and is of German citizenship. He startedhis career as an engineer with Eaton, a global power management company, joining Methode Electronicsin its Southfield, MI, Engineering Organization in 1998. He graduated from German and US universities, he is a natural and dynamic corporate leader with a PhD in Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and economy engineering degrees, publishing multiple papers focused on production systems and the management of multi-project environments. He is an assertive, goal-oriented, long-range strategic thinker able to communicate fluently in French, German, English, and Arabic. He implemented Lean Manufacturing and principles of continuous improvement, organizational development, quality assurance, business planning and execution, and enhanced customer relationship management to the Group's operationsin Malta, Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Lebanon, and Egypt. Dr. Khoury is an authority in the use of modern engineering and management tools and techniques, coupled with a thorough understanding of manufacturing processes and planning. He is also a hands-on data analyst with in-depth comprehension of DMAIC problem-solving methodology, as well as deployment and project development approaches. He brings a very dynamic presence to the organization, served by earned self-confidence and excellent communication skills. He is assertive, innovative, and a long-range strategic thinker with tremendous personal drive and presence focused toward reaching goals.
