Overview

In 1953, a teenage girl, Jeanne Sar, jumps in front of a train at the Gare du Nord station. She leaves behind writings that to some are unreadable, but to others tell universal, unspoken truths about the lives and struggles of women. When published in the 1970s, her work triggers a rash of copycat suicides. It is hastily withdrawn from sale and eventually forgotten about. Then, in 2004, two women from opposite corners of the globe--Amsterdam and Sydney--rediscover Jeanne Sar's book and set out to discover who the author was and what happened to her. Women across the ages have attached their own stories to Sar's, often with devastating results, but the truth about her may be even stranger than the fictions they have invented.

Author Information

Nino Haratischvili is an award-winning novelist, playwright, and theatre director. At home in two different worlds, each with their own language, she has been writing in both German and Georgian since the age of twelve. In its German edition, The Eighth Life was a bestseller, and won the Anna Seghers Prize, the Lessing Prize Stipend, and the Bertolt Brecht Prize 2018. It is being translated into many languages and has already been a major bestseller on publication in Holland, Poland, and Georgia. Ruth Martin has a Ph.D. in German literature and philosophy from the University of London. Her recent translations include Volker Weidermann's Dreamers, Michael Khlmeier's novels Two Gentlemen on the Beach and Yiza, short fiction by Joseph Roth, and essays by Hannah Arendt. She has taught translation to undergraduates at Birkbeck and the University of Kent and is currently co-chair of the Society of Authors Translators Association. Having studied English Literature at the University of Sussex, before going on to have a career as an actress and performer, it is probably only natural that Helen would have expanded to include narration as a strand of her work. She has been telling stories as long as she can remember. Stories to her parents, stories to her classmates...she has always loved to engage a listener with words, emotion and timing. A British narrator living in West Hollywood, her performing career has encompassed many genres of acting across all mediums, as well as working as a professional puppeteer and circus artist. She toured with Cirque du Soleil for four years, seeing much of the world along the way.
