In the Land of the He-Coon, Blue Angels and Saint Bobby: Reporting from the Florida Panhandle

Overview

The Florida Panhandle, now home to 1.7 million residents, has evolved from a rural backwater to a significant player in national defense, sports, politics and culture, showcasing remarkable figures and events that shaped its vibrant history and identity. The story begins with Congressman Bob Sikes, known as the He-Coon, who played a crucial role in establishing the Panhandle as a national defense stronghold. His efforts led to the expansion of military bases, including Eglin Air Force Base, the largest in the nation, and Pensacola Naval Air Station, the birthplace of naval aviation and home to the renowned Blue Angels. These installations have been vital in training military personnel and developing weapons for numerous conflicts, contributing significantly to the nation's defense capabilities. Beyond military achievements, the Panhandle has witnessed its share of challenges, including notorious crimes and devastating natural disasters. Yet, it has also made strides in civil rights, law, and environmental advocacy. The legacy of ""Saint Bobby"" Bowden, who guided Florida State University to national football championships, exemplifies the region's impact on sports. The Panhandle is or has been home to a diverse array of notable figures, including Nobel laureate Paul Dirac, talk show host Joe Scarborough, and sports Hall of Famers like Emmitt Smith and Roy Jones Jr. Their stories, along with those of many others, are woven into this anthology, offering a rich tapestry of the Panhandle's history. Through the eyes of journalists, readers will discover the triumphs and tragedies that define this often-overlooked corner of Florida.
