Reviews

House of Muscle & Bone A book of poems by M. Anne Sweet quakes with impassioned fiery language: vivid sound and never-conceived-before metaphors. House of Muscle & Bone pays homage to people, nature, and monuments of time. Images of life and death merge, descend, transcend. She asks you to hitch a ride with her through worldly lands and the underground terror of history alongside the love of art and music. Musicality and sexuality zing, bang, thump, meld her poetry via enjambed line breaks of lyrical songs. Women in all her forms - mother of child, mother of earth, mother of daughter - plead, cry, wail, and cajole. Iconic memories and Yoruba spirits are scattered like bones left onshore - Jackie Kennedy's pink pillbox hat, the Statue of Liberty, the divine manifestations of orishas. At the end of Sweet's litany of lamentations, we are left with a combined blessing of OM + AMEN - a derivative plead for freedom, the end of hunger, the obliteration of hatred, a healed community, a compassionate humanity, a saved world. -Geri Gale (she/her), multi-hyphenate artist (poet, novelist, memoirist, illustrator, narratress)
