Homosexuality in the Bible

Overview

The Bible contains several passages--the so-called ""clobber"" texts--in the Old and New Testaments that are often cited to condemn LGBTQIA+ persons. When condemnation is joined with traditional social intolerance of the LGBTQIA+ community, LGBTQIA+ people face harsh discrimination, ridicule, and harassment. Deeply troubled about the well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community under such condemnation, the author, a veteran biblical scholar, university professor, and pastor, challenges the misuse of such texts. He critically reexamines in the light of their own time and place what the biblical writers had to say about homosexuality. Does the Bible clearly condemn homosexuality? Does it censure all same-sex relations? Do the Scriptures also denounce other sexual orientations on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum? The author's thorough biblical investigation deals with these and other questions. His analysis concludes by charting a bold new path of hope for LGBTQIA+ people.

Reviews

""As Dr. Gladson, the Hebrew Bible scholar, Jerry authoritatively reviews the biblical material regarding homosexuality. As Rev. Gladson, the clergyman, he caringly assures persons of the homosexual community of God's love for them. This book wonderfully combines both."" --Warren C. Trenchard, Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Early Christian Literature, La Sierra University ""Every serious Christian should read this highly accessible book. Through an honest, quiet voice of reason, biblical scholar Gladson provides space for our own inner work as he engages every text in the Bible that may relate to some type of homosexuality."" --Shandelle M. Henson, Professor of Mathematics Emeritus, Andrews University ""In a time when the Bible is too often wielded as a weapon against the LGBTQ+ community, Dr. Gladson's book is a breath of fresh air. . . . For anyone, clergy or laity, who longs for a faith that truly welcomes all of God's creation, read this book--then pass it on!"" --Heather Hunnicutt, Licensed Professional Counselor ""Dr. Gladson brings an informed faith, integrity, and sensitivity to a tough topic. . . . I appreciate his careful attention to the meaning and context of the scriptural passages--what is said and what is not said. Well-written and scholarly, this book is also deeply personal as it calls us forward with new eyes and hearts."" --Betty C. Brewer-Calvert, Director of Chaplaincy, Campbell-Stone Retirement Communities
