Heal Your Trauma: How to overcome a painful childhood to become happy and whole again

Overview

Heal Your Trauma is a compassionate and practical guide to recognising the lasting effects of trauma and learning how to heal and recover.  Trauma leaves traces - in our minds, bodies and relationships - long after the original wounds occurred. Even experiences we thought we'd 'moved on' from can resurface years later as anxiety, depression, anger, substance abuse or low self-esteem.  Drawing on powerful trauma-informed models - including Internal Family Systems, schema therapy and mindful self-compassion - therapist Dan Roberts shows how to calm your nervous system, reconnect with all parts of yourself and build lasting emotional resilience.  Through clear explanations and guided exercises, Roberts helps readers come to terms with the past and move forward with strength and confidence. The healing process can feel challenging, but the rewards of living an authentic life are transformative. Your wounds do not have to define you - and it's never too late to heal.  For example, you'll learn: How trauma affects the mind and body - even years after it occurred.  Practical tools from leading therapy models to soothe and regulate your emotions.  Techniques for working compassionately with your 'inner parts' to resolve old wounds. Ways to identify triggers and develop healthier emotional responses. Steps for building resilience, balance and genuine self-acceptance.  Whether you're beginning your healing journey or continuing work in therapy, this book provides an informed, reassuring companion for lasting change.  Grounded in clinical insight and filled with accessible exercises, Heal Your Trauma offers a gentle roadmap to moving beyond survival mode and toward wholeness.

Reviews

""A beautifully written and deeply compassionate guide for people healing from childhood trauma. Dan Roberts skilfully integrates parts work, Internal Family Systems, schema therapy and compassion-focused approaches, making complex therapeutic ideas accessible without ever diluting their depth. Written for those who have experienced trauma, but equally valuable for therapists, this book offers a wise and hopeful path towards understanding our protectors, caring for the wounded child within, and becoming more whole."" --Susan Simpson - Clinical Psychologist & Founder of Schema Therapy Training Scotland

""This is the book I'm going to be reaching for when I need something utterly reliable to help someone I meet, not just understand but experience, what it's like to start healing their emotional wounds. Dan's work is based on the latest and most helpful ways psychology currently has of understanding trauma and how to heal it, and yet it's about as far from a dry dusty textbook on the subject or an overly optimistic self-help book as one could imagine. What stands out most for me is the voice and presence of Dan himself as a gentle, patient, deeply kind and compassionate companion on the healing journey. Dan's way of relating to the reader through his writing becomes an increasingly memorable aspect of the experience. By the end of the book, I was automatically calling to mind his words and tone as an encouragement to pause, to breathe, to acknowledge my own needs. Heal Your Trauma is written by an experienced fellow traveller on the healing journey, not someone watching from the sidelines - I felt seen, validated, and understood, but never judged."" --Sarah Pagdin CPsychol AFBPsS ""In this wonderful book Dan carefully selects and weaves together research, theory, case studies, and experiential exercises to support you to 'Heal your Trauma'. This is a practical and extremely readable guidebook. There is clarity and discernment in what is included, with Dan's extensive experience as a therapist and what he has found to be helpful informing these choices. Dan is a compassionate companion on your journey as you read this book, one who is open in sharing his own trauma and healing journey. His companionable, human and relatable tone, seems to me like an antidote to the sense of isolation and shame we can carry when painful experiences have wounded us. This is a book that gives me hope that we can open to compassion towards ourselves, heal our trauma and access more peace and fulfilment in our lives and relationships."" --Sue Smith MBACP, Certified IFS Therapist & Lead Trainer for the IFS Institute ""A beautifully written and deeply compassionate guide for people healing from childhood trauma.
