“It’s alright, you’re at Hazelgrove, you’re safe here.” But Hazelgrove is crumbling and its future looks bleak. Oliver should feel lucky to be living in a stately home, but the roof leaks and there isn’t enough money for repairs. He has learned that people bring problems so he does not welcome Rachel’s intrusion into his life. Perhaps her enthusiasm for Hazelgrove will inspire him to look at things differently. They are not the only ones who need a fresh start and the kindness of strangers: a gardener desperate to provide a future for his autistic son; an eccentric gamekeeper haunted by the past; a neglected child; a failed businessman; a cook passionate about reducing food miles and recycling. Each of them needs to recover from their own trauma and carries their own burdens but if they can recognise a second chance when it is offered and be brave enough to take it then maybe they can save Hazelgrove and save themselves.
