Firefly Lullaby

Overview

From the inimitable author-illustrator Kenneth Kraegel comes another sweetly soothing bedtime book in the vein of Mushroom Lullaby and Mermaid Lullaby. As the sun sets on a warm summer evening, a very small sound calls to those with a certain kind of ear. It is not the sighing song of wrens and robins, nor is it the gentle hum of crickets. It’s the magical sound of fireflies—dancing to the music of tiny trumpets, feasting upon an elaborate banquet, and singing songs to settle their wings before huddling close for a soothing night’s sleep. This charming and cozy story, with its luminous imagery and lyrical text, will lull little ones into comforting dreams of fireflies flickering in the night.

Reviews

[T]he surreal landscape envelops readers, harkening back to a time and place that might live in young minds forevermore. The result is a salute not simply to summer itself, but also to communal celebrations. Kraegel’s ink and watercolor illustrations carry all the silliness and humor one might hope to find on a warm July night without skidding into outright chaos and calamity. —Kirkus Reviews

The illustrations, ink and watercolor, are lush and inviting, a complete absence of white space encouraging full immersion into the twilight sky filled with the adventuring bugs. —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
