Student's Book If you are teaching a short Cambridge English: First course, the stand-alone lessons in each unit are ideal. Each unit includes a lesson for each of the five papers of the exam: Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening, Speaking. Each lesson focuses on a different aspect of the exam from the lesson in the unit before. You can then use the Revise and Extend sections to consolidate students' learning. Students can learn more about the exam in the FCE exam overview, and regular Exam Helpline tips teach them how to approach exam tasks. The Writing Guide with sample answers and examiner's comments gives students clear guidelines for this difficult paper. If there are any grammar points students are not sure of, the Grammar Reference acts as a reminder. The Online Workbook gives your students practice online. They will respond enthusiastically to the instant support. Exercises feature automatic marking, instant feedback, online dictionary (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary), grammar look-up (Oxford Learner's Pocket Grammar), voice recording that you can mark within the LMS, audio scripts, sample written answers and useful language. Answers are even saved automatically so that students can continue later. In addition there are 100 key-word transformations, and unit-by-unit wordlists for students to write in translations, all done online. Online practice test When they are ready for the exam, students can prepare for every paper with the online FCE practice test. Doing a practice test is one of the best ways to improve student confidence. It helps them understand what each task asks them to do, how long they can spend on each question, and what examiners are looking for. Our online practice tests have interactive support such as automatic marking, instant feedback, online dictionary (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary), audio scripts, sample written answers and useful language. If you choose to manage your students' practice with the LMS, you will be able to assign the practice test in 'test mode', without support features and with a timer, or in 'practice mode', with support features and no timer. New Fast Class student's book contains ten units covering the four language skills, a focus on the Use of English and revision exercises. The book boasts some excellent word-formation exercises and useful ideas for guided writing practice. The most exciting and innovative aspect of the material is the online workbook. Students can use these materials as part of their course, or independently for self-study. They receive an access code at the back of their book. Some of the material is quite lively, while some is rather mechnanical. Definitely of interest to students studying for the First Certificate in English examination. EL Gazette, December 2010
