OverviewA specialist English language learning course book for nurses who are non-native speakers of English. This title is intended for self study but would serve as a resource for a taught course. The text describes the current crisis in the British NHS to explain why overseas nurses are being recruited. However, this is by way of an introduction and is a minor part. Otherwise it focuses on two things; the English used in clinical documentation and spoken English in the context of hospitals, illnesses and treatment. The book presents examples of formal medical English, colloquialisms, idioms and clinical notes. The user practices reading and writing through exercises and the language is introduced through the medium of a series of simulated clinical cases. The first part of the book contains text and exercises which are about nursing in the NHS - the crisis, what nurses say about the crisis, the hospital hierarchy, pay and conditions and applying for jobs, The second part is about communication in a simulated hospital setting. At its core are clinical forms relating to admission, patient care and hospital discharge. These forms and clinical documents generate exercises, which practice parts of language, such as idiomatic phrases. The illustrations in the book assist with the clarity and understanding of situations and scenarios.
