Durch die Nachzeichnung der Verwendungsweisen von ἔσχατος über mehrere Jahrhunderte und Traditionen hinweg zeigt der Autor, dass die „Endzeit"" nicht auf einen chronologischen Endpunkt reduzierbar ist, sondern eine theologische und philosophische Kategorie darstellt. Auf diese Weise schafft er eine neue Grundlage für die Interpretation eschatologischer Sprache.
