In 1956 he moved to Los Angeles to study at the Chouinard Art Institute and has lived and worked in LA since. Ruscha’s work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in major museums and private collections throughout the world. In 2001 Ruscha was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 2005 he was chosen by the US Department of State to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale. In 2023–24, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, is presenting a comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work spanning his career. Ruscha’s books with Steidl include the Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings (volumes 1–7, 2004–2016), THEN & NOW: Hollywood Boulevard 1973–2004 (2005), On the Road (2009), Los Angeles Apartments (2013) and Photographer (2013).
