OverviewDuring the years, the Internet has seen an increasing commercial success and an ever increasing user traffic. Frequently accessed services, such as very popular web sites, have to deal with a huge and growing amount of requests, thus often suffering from network and server congestions. Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have been introduced to overcome these limitations: they are combinations of various subsystems, the most important ones being the replica infrastructure and the request distribution system. CDNs are now commonly deployed, and many different CDN providers are operational today. Designing such a system thus requires addressing placing replicas and directing user request to appropriate replicas. This book proposes a new model for dynamically placing replicas in a distributed way, along with a proposal for a redirection system to appropriately direct requests balancing the load among replicas. The analysis, carried on by means of simulation, should be useful for both scholars and professionals wanting to apply novel techniques in CDNs.
