He has written over 200 comics and books, mostly based on history and literature. He has also written film scripts, short stories, role playing games, and a video game storyline. Before turning to writing as a freelance career, he owned and operated a chain of bookstores in the Detroit area and was publisher of Caliber Press, a specialty house of comics, books, games, and other related material. In addition to his writing, Gary also currently teaches biology courses at various community colleges. He lives in a suburb of Detroit with his wife, Jennifer, and they have four daughters.
