He received his doctorate in Linguistics from the University of Hawaii, and is internationally renowned for his research in Korean linguistics and its pedagogy. His publications include Korean: A Linguistic Introduction and Integrated Korean: High Advanced. He was a past chair of the Korean Special Interest Group (SIG) at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and was also co-chair of the ""National Standards for Learning Korean"" task force associated with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
