OverviewWith a trade union history largely inherited from that of metropolitan France, Senegal has, over the years, developed a strong and distinctive trade union movement, adapted to local realities. This capacity for progress and innovation reflects a trade union revival that is increasingly identifying with the workers who form its cornerstone. Despite this wave of renewal, Senegalese trade union law has always remained in line with the international standards and principles set by the ILO, notably through the ratification of Conventions Nos. 98 and 87, which lay the foundations for the protection of freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining. Senegal has thus emphasised its commitment to shifting the focus from political democracy towards social democracy. Through the framework of dialogue and consultation that is collective bargaining, stakeholders in the world of work are provided with a consensual means of making their demands heard and a space capable of ensuring a peaceful social climate. However, the development of collective bargaining in Senegal remains intrinsically dependent on the succession of regimes and political changes.
