This book explores the diverse styles of the blues. From the mutual influence between African cultures and those of the West, right through to the seamless transition from rhythm and blues to rock and roll, the book traces the evolution of blues styles from their origins up to around the 1970s. The central question is how these styles emerged and how they developed. All the supposed truths of the present are compared with those of the past in order to get a little closer to reality. This book compares the facts of that era with the status quo of today. In doing so, it also gets to the bottom of myths, such as that of the legendary Robert Johnson. All too often, a plausible, practical and economic explanation lurks behind the stories.
